Charlotte Hawkins and Kris Glover share expert advice for creating safe and enriching gardens for dogs

The TV presenter and Dogs Trust expert reveal practical tips on puppy training, behaviour and outdoor spaces at Ideal Home Show 2026 in partnership with Selina Finance.

Charlotte Hawkins and Dogs Trust’s Kris Glover shared practical advice on caring for dogs during their appearance at the Ideal Home Show, focusing on how thoughtful environments and simple techniques can support a dog’s wellbeing.

Charlotte opened with a personal reflection on welcoming a new rescue puppy, highlighting both the joy and responsibility that comes with it.

“I rescued a dog called Bailey… and I’ve just had a new arrival… a six month old dog who has brought us a lot of joy,” she said.

Creating the first outdoor space

Kris emphasised that a garden plays a key role in a dog’s early development.

“It’s the first outdoor adventure space we can offer our puppies,” she explained, noting that exposure to sights, sounds and scents helps build confidence and curiosity.

Designing for safety and stimulation

A well designed garden should balance security with enrichment.

Checking for escape routes, removing hazards and avoiding toxic plants are essential first steps, while allowing space for exploration helps keep dogs engaged and active.

Encouraging positive behaviour

Rather than discouraging natural instincts, the pair encouraged redirecting them.

Providing designated digging areas or rewarding appropriate behaviour can help guide habits, protecting both the dog and the garden.

Kris also highlighted the importance of recognising signs of stress, such as changes in posture or behaviour, to ensure dogs feel safe and comfortable.

Supporting wellbeing through play

Simple tools can make a big difference to a dog’s daily routine.

Interactive items such as lick mats, snuffle mats and enrichment toys can help reduce anxiety, manage energy levels and encourage calm behaviour.

Creating a space that works for you and your dog

By combining safe design with enrichment and understanding behaviour, Charlotte and Kris’s advice shows how small changes can create a garden that supports both enjoyment and wellbeing.
