Wayne Perrey shares essential drill tips and practical advice for DIY beginners

The DIY expert and TV presenter offers simple guidance on using a combination drill and building confidence at home at Ideal Home Show Spring 2026 in partnership with Selina Finance.

Wayne Perrey shared practical, easy to follow advice for tackling DIY at home during his appearance at the Ideal Home Show, focusing on how a combination drill can help build confidence for beginners.

Building confidence through DIY

Wayne described drilling as a key first step into DIY, helping people feel more independent at home.

“Drilling is a gateway to DIY,” he said, recalling a recent example of a homeowner who proudly completed her own shelving project. “It brings you real independence.”

Choosing the right drill

For those starting out, Wayne recommends investing in a combination drill due to its versatility.

“I always recommend a combination drill for first time DIYers, it's incredibly versatile, so you won’t need to buy any other drill,” he said.

He explained that features such as the hammer setting are particularly useful for drilling into solid walls, combining rotation with forward motion for added power.

Mastering control and technique

Wayne emphasised the importance of control when using a drill, especially when screwing into surfaces.

“My top tip when screwing into anything is to take it slow and steady,” he said. Applying gentle, consistent pressure helps guide the drill and maintain accuracy.

When removing screws, he advised keeping steady pressure to ensure stability throughout.

Simple tricks to remember settings

To make things easier, Wayne uses simple phrases to remember drill functions.

“Lefty Lucy is the reverse setting, the one you use to loosen and remove screws. Righty Righty tightens them,” he explained.

He also compared drill speed settings to car gears, noting that lower settings are faster with less power, while higher settings offer more control and strength.
