Poppy O’Toole shares simple no-waste recipe ideas for everyday cooking

Poppy O’Toole shares simple no-waste recipe ideas for everyday cooking

The chef and social media star reveals how to turn leftovers into a one-pan meal at Ideal Home Show 2026 in partnership with Selina Finance.

Poppy O’Toole, known as the Potato Queen, shared a simple and practical approach to no-waste cooking during her appearance at the Ideal Home Show, demonstrating how everyday ingredients can be transformed into a comforting one-pan dish.

Using a savoury French toast-style bake, Poppy showed how leftover bread and fridge staples can be combined to create a quick, satisfying meal with minimal effort.

Making the most of leftovers

At the heart of Poppy’s recipe is reducing waste.

Slightly stale bread works best, as it absorbs the custard mixture, while ingredients close to their best before date can be easily repurposed. “If it’s not mouldy, it’s usable,” she explained.

Layering vegetables such as mushrooms, onions and tomatoes with a chosen protein creates a flexible base that can be adapted to suit whatever is on hand.

Building flavour with simple steps

The dish comes together by pouring a mixture of eggs, milk and cream over the layered ingredients, allowing it to soak into the bread before baking.

Topping with cheese and herbs adds extra flavour, while resting the dish before cooking helps everything absorb fully.

Cooking for comfort and convenience

Baked until golden and crisp around the edges, the result is a soft, custardy centre with a satisfying texture.

Poppy recommends serving straight from the pan to keep things simple and reduce washing up, making it ideal for busy households.

A smarter approach to everyday cooking

Poppy’s recipe highlights how cooking can be both practical and creative.

By using what you already have and keeping techniques simple, her approach shows how to reduce waste while still creating delicious, comforting meals at home.
