Emily Wheeler shares expert tips for designing homes that support mental wellbeing

Furnishing Futures CEO, the Official Charity of the Ideal Home Show, reveals how thoughtful design can create calming, restorative spaces at Ideal Home Show 2026 in partnership with Selina Finance.

Emily Wheeler shared practical advice on designing spaces that support mental health during her appearance at the Ideal Home Show, highlighting how interiors can positively influence how we feel at home.

Drawing on her work with Furnishing Futures, Emily emphasised that creating a nurturing environment goes beyond aesthetics, focusing instead on emotional impact and everyday comfort.

Designing for feeling, not just function

Emily encouraged homeowners to prioritise how a space feels rather than how it looks.

Creating environments that feel calm, safe and uplifting can have a lasting effect on wellbeing, moving away from trend-led design towards more personal, meaningful choices.

Maximising light and privacy

Natural light plays a vital role in supporting sleep and overall health.

However, Emily highlighted the importance of balancing light with privacy, ensuring spaces feel both open and secure.

Bringing nature indoors

Biophilic design was a key theme, with Emily recommending the use of plants, natural materials and organic textures.

These elements can help reduce stress, improve sleep and create a stronger connection to the natural world.

Creating calm through shape and space

Soft, curved shapes were highlighted as a way to make interiors feel more relaxing.

Reducing clutter and creating clear, easy to navigate layouts can also help the mind feel more at ease, supporting a calmer living environment.

Making spaces personal

Emily stressed the importance of personal choice in design.

From colours to layouts, understanding what feels soothing on an individual level helps create a stronger sense of ownership and comfort at home.

Designing for long term wellbeing

Emily’s insights show how thoughtful, intentional design can transform how a home supports daily life.

By focusing on comfort, simplicity and personal connection, it is possible to create spaces that not only look good, but genuinely enhance wellbeing.
