Sophie was born in London and grew up in Suffolk. After gaining a Bachelors degree from Manchester and Masters degree from Toulouse, both in Psychology, she was selected to attend the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. She commissioned as an Officer in the Royal Artillery where she served all over the world, including Afghanistan. After leaving the Regular Army, she worked as a surveillance consultant, personal trainer and Alpine ski touring instructor before applying for The Great British Bake Off.
In the summer of 2017, Sophie entered the hallowed Bake Off tent where she competed against 11 other bakers for the title of Great British Bake Off Champion 2017. Sophie was described by Paul Hollywood as the most ‘consistent baker’ ever on the show, who was never in the running to be sent home.
The multi award-winning Head pastry chef, Benoit Blin was “…impressed with Sophie’s work”, describing her bakes as having “finesse” and “French flair”. She came into her own in the patisserie rounds with Prue Leith describing her Les Miserable slices in the hardest technical challenge in Bake Off history as “Perfect”. Paul Hollywood was “shocked at the standard” of the original and complex entremet which ultimately won her the competition.
Sophie continues to perfect her baking skills and takes particular interest in being inspired by the top pastry chefs and traditional bakes from around the globe. She specialises in celebration cakes, chocolaterie and fine patisserie and has an interest in alternative grains, sugar-free baking and performance foods.
