A traditional cottage with a modern, contemporary interior.
The 21st Century Cottage showcases the interior styles of a family that has relocated from London in order to start a new life in the countryside. This traditional home has the latest in interior design trends showing you how to blend the old with new to create a warm and inviting home.
From the outside, the cottage is quintessentially countryside. A traditional thatched roof with layered Thatch reveals a peacock on the ridge. With the continued growth of eco-friendly development in the UK the cottage shows how a renewable and carbon neutral material such as Thatch can not only be cost effective, being a great insulator of both noise and temperature, but is also bringing the ancient tradition of thatching into the 21st century.
The wood cladding from the outside adds a modern twist to the traditional brick exterior. Outdoor spaces such as the Pergola and Veranda add a quiet place to sit, read and book and enjoy the beautiful view of the countryside.
Heading inside, the cottage displays the change from traditional to modern with a stylish and comfortable interior. With the use of smart and sophisticated colour palettes the home reveals how from a teenager’s bedroom to the cosy living room both subtle and bold choices in wall colour can help to create a home to suit all the family’s styles.
The modern interior is carried through to the kitchen which proves all white kitchens are a thing of the past. An exciting, unusual colour palette in the kitchen proves that a brave choice can be the perfect match for a traditional home. The kitchen is heart of the family home and the injection of this bright colour brings an element of fun to family’s daily life.
Throughout the home the use of textures from luxurious rugs to tactile bedding shows you how layering can be used to add depth and interest to any room. Ingenious storage solutions and specially crafted pieces of furniture lend themselves to the modern country feel. With details of mid-century furniture adding interesting talking points showing how previously own pieces can be woven into a new home to create character.
The 21st Century Cottage is the perfect display of an informal and relaxed home, with modern family living at its core.
The 21st Century Cottage has been styled by Chichester College’s Art & Design extended diploma students. As part of their course all students were asked to develop concept mood boards for each of the rooms which were shortlisted by a panel of judges. The winners have gone onto source soft furnishing and accessories as well as choose products from key suppliers. The Ideal Home Show is proud to be working in conjunction with Chichester College to support the future of the Interior Design industry.
