Not all of us have the luxury of living in a stately home with loads of space. The day-to-day reality is that we always want a bit more room and don’t want to feel overwhelmed by furniture or colour. The good news is that there are many things you can do to transform your space to make it feel roomier and open. Check out Design Help's top tips on how to help you get the best out of your home.
Firstly, mirrors are marvellous for giving the illusion of space. Hang them in narrow corridors or either side of a chimney breast with a chair or book case in front.
When it comes to sofas, choose two seater sofas that are smaller in width but have enough space for two people to sit comfortably. Why not add individual chairs as well to break the space up a bit more. It’s always worth using side tables rather than the more traditional centre coffee table.
Don’t be afraid to experiment as well. Why not use a variety of different upholstery fabrics and break it up with an old leather chair?
Painting the skirting the same colour as the floor covering will also extend the illusion of space and you can continue the colour around doors on the architraves, especially if they are very ornate and attractive. This also makes them a feature.
