Budding inventors create 'Home Invention of the Year'

At the Ideal Home Show today, TV scientist and invention enthusiast Adam Hart Davis awarded four 12 year old boys from Ashfold Primary School in Aylesbury the accolade of producing the ‘Home Invention of the Year’ for their ‘Speed Searcher’ – a device for finding lost items.

The Ideal Home Show challenged people of all ages and design abilities to come up with ingenious solutions to everyday household problems. Almost a thousand people entered and the ten best are on displayed at the Show in Earl’s Court. The design by school boys Thomas Schmidt, Alex French, Cameron Hughes and Angus Haines was voted into the top spot by show visitors.

The “Speed Searcher” attaches small chips to valuables and computer software can pinpoint their location in the home. The four boys will receive a £2,000 cash prize and a year long contract with London based Inventorlink, Britain’s leading new products marketing company specialists in commercialising new ideas.

Adam Hart-Davis said: “It is great to see the boys from emerge victorious. We were really impressed with the quality of all our finalists; however the ‘Speed Searcher’ is one of the most original, and ingenious, which is exactly what we were looking for. It also goes to show that all of us have the potential to be a successful inventor, no matter what age we are!”

Two runners up were also announced at the Show today. First runner up is the ‘Elegance Shower’ designed by Polly Firth, a devise that makes washing and shaving in the shower easier. The second runner up is the ‘Push Up Plant Pot’ designed by Alistair Martin, a devise that allows gardeners to transfer plants easily by simply pushing up the base of the pot.
